• The “Compact Disc” celebrated its 25th birthday last year. In a press release issued Thursday 26th October 2007, Philips said a staggering 200 billion of them were produced since the first one was stamped off the production line on Aug. 17, 1982. The first CD to be manufactured at the plant was “The Visitors” by ABBA. By the time CDs were introduced on the market in November 1982, a catalog of around 150 titles – mainly classical music – had been produced. The first CDs and CD players – including Philips’ CD100 – were introduced in Japan in November, followed by a US and European market introduction in March of 1983.

The Compact Disc was created from a partnership between Philips
and Sony. Philips created most of the core technology while Sony
helped with digital encoding for smooth playback. The two would
later square off against each other in the 1990s as Sony’s MiniDisc
went in direct competition with Philips’ Digital Compact Cassette.
Though MiniDisc gained more widespread adoption, neither format
was considered a success. At the time, there was no emerging
technology really competing against the CD format. Its biggest
battle was against vinyl records, an institution all but gone by the
end of the 1980s, but which still remains the longest-running home
    audio format in the world.

    Printable CD & DVD media

We first have to make sure that we're working with a CD or a DVD suitable for your purpose. Not all CD and DVD's have the same printable surface and some makes of discs give strange reactions if they are not adapted for inkjet CD printing. I highly recommend Taiyo Yuden CD and DVD, which always guarantee a very good result. Cheaper branded discs like Datawrite, Ritek, Infiniti, Prodisc, Panasonic and Intenso are good too and offer value for money. I'm a great believer in the old addage that you get what you pay for, and in the case of blank CD & DVD media I've found this to be very true.

Get the best from your Artwork

Artwork quality is important to ensure a good print finish. To make sure your artwork is suitable for printing, check the size of your document and the resolution. The higher the resolution of your artwork, the better the printing result will be. If you are not sure of your artwork, feel free to ask.

I also advise to avoid flat colour backgrounds, especially in black and darker colours. In the printing process stripy lines can appear, easily noticed with a flat colour surface more than if for instance you use photographs as a background. What's more, darker colours use a lot more ink, any mark or fault is more noticable, and the CD or DVD is more easily scratched.

Some problems can appear when printing pale texts on dark backgrounds. The ink can spread on the text causing the fonts to appear to be very thin, almost invisible. If you bold your text or add an outline, better results are achieved.

    Discs

For even better results I use WaterShield or Silver topped discs. With a glossy finish, this is the best media available. The WaterShield surface protects discs from fingerprints, moisture, rain and spills with its highly-water resistant printing surface. More, it produces a shiny, professional finish and doesn't need to be spray fixed.

These guys invented the CD-R! Taiyo Yuden's long history of development and manufacturing combined with their zero tolerance for sub standard product makes their media the best choice for your requirements. Nobody beats this quality, their CD-Rs & DVD-R's outperform the competition in recording accuracy and superior durability in a wide variety of data and audio applications.

    Prices

On the right are some examples of my prices for CD-R's. Like I said, you generally get what you pay for and I can of course get cheaper discs. You may not even need printed discs and I can do this for you too. It really comes down to what you need and the quality you expect.

Prices for DVD on application. I do not have facilities for mass duplicating DVD's at present but can arrange this type of work for you at cost.

Smaller orders than 100 items are going to cost you more and repeat orders are going to be a bit cheaper. I'm also open to bartering for my services, so if you have something you'd like to trade, let me know.

I can also supply these discs and any other blank media you require for your own use at very competitive prices.
